In one short, locally made PSA, a little boy exploring puppetry on his computer suddenly realizes he's at the real deal ? Atlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts. In a second spot, happy, bouncing dogs and contented cats are featured at the adoption center PAWS Atlanta. Both films ? the first from Raymond Carr, the second from Amy Jackson and Mark Burch ? are part of the PSA Project, a local initiative pairing local filmmakers with local organizations and resulting in 30- or 60-second public service announcements. At least 10 filmmakers ? including Carr, Jackson, Burch, Kathy Skinner, Vinnie Murphy, Sister Smith, Maxwell Guberman, Tim Habeger, J.D. Taylor and John Pruner ? participated in the project. Their works will be screened four times in the next few days at PushPush Theater in Decatur. Each screening will involve a Q&A session with the filmmakers. Showtimes are 10 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, and 8 p.m. April 13 and 14. Suggested admission is $5-$15 except on April 14, which has an admission of $15 and includes entry to PushPush's 10th-anniversary celebration from 3 to 11 p.m. Carr's film can be seen online at www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1lEHKDg-Ts. Jackson and Burch's film can be seen at www.karmalizedpictures.com/PSA_Documentary.html. But I thought everyone could benefit from this. This was on my Producer's group this morning. It explains the process very well and helps you to understand why the process takes so long and why it is so important. I just thought the group would like to see what I send people who ask me for a topsheet only, or a quickie budget or can I please do the work for $500 and a promise to UPM the project. This is why it is skilled labor. Here are the services that I provide when doing a Board and Budget: Creation of Production Script by Script Edit and/or Polish The script presented to me is the result of a creative effort. It is meant to be read, enjoyed, and sold. Consequently it is filled with artistic metaphors, montage sequences, and the kind of driving force that does not easily lend itself to a production approach. I then worked either with the writer, director or producer to edit and or polish the script for production purposes. Typos are corrected. Montage sequences are fleshed out into individual scenes so they can be appropriately budgeted. Long sequences that should really be a series of scenes are separated into the appropriate units. Slug line (i.e., Ext. New York Street -- Day), are adjusted and clarified for either location and/or significant action. Since this is usually done with me typing into a software called Movie Magic Screenwriter (so that some elements of it can be imported into Movie Magic Scheduling), it also gives the creative person a last opportunity to adjust logical inconsistencies or dialogue they would like to change. The result of this process is to generate a script that has no typos, no logical inconsistencies, no metaphors that cannot be quantified, slug lines that make sense and help create a working vocabulary for all the crew members will be working with the production script. In short, the final production script that everyone agrees is a script that will be broken down, scheduled and budgeted. Script Breakdown During this process I print out the final production script and with pencil and ruler create the "Lined Production Script". For each and every scene in the film, normally running anywhere from 135 scenes to over 200 scenes, I note every single element that has to be scheduled and were budgeted such as: all speaking parts and stunt players , all extras (and their descriptions), all props, stunts, mechanical effects, optical effects, CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), old vehicles, all additional personnel or equipment needed for a scene. In effect, I have imagined the script on its feet, scene by scene, and noted every single budgetable item. Then, as the final part of the script breakdown process, I type all of this information, scene by scene, into Movie Magic Scheduling software. Scheduling Based on extensive on set production experience as a Line Producer, Unit Production Manager and Assistant Director, I take the strips generated by the software (one strip for each and every scene in the film) and create a real-time projected schedule for the shooting of that particular script. The schedule will take into account Screen Actors Guild rules and regulations, hard-won rules of thumb about the most rational way to budget for production economy, the creation of cover sets for each day of the exterior shooting, and a profound understanding of how much actual work can be accomplished in any 12 hour shooting day for a particular script. This will determine how many days and weeks of shooting are absolutely required in order to achieve the work indicated end a specific script. Every script is different. Every schedule has to be individually sculpted for a particular script. Once a realistic and achievable schedule has been created (that is a strip board, sometimes simply called the board"), then all corollary backup material is also generated, such as the strip board itself, the Day Out Of Days (chart that shows which days or weeks each actor will work), schedules of special effects, stunts, special props, all vehicles used in the film as picture vehicles, all vehicle used in the film as production vehicles, a full production schedule form, a one-liner production schedule form and any other backup that is appropriate for the specific script. Budgeting Using all of the material generated by the script breakdown and scheduling software, I then generate a 60 to 90 page production budget, taking into account every single budget item in the script, in addition to allowances for the above the line staff (including producers, director, writer's and actors at all speaking parts), all items in postproduction and all items in the part of the budget generally entitled "Other", which includes legal fees, accounting fees, medical fees, office overhead, and development payback where applicable. The budget is created with as much detail as possible, to show how figures were arrived at, what research was done, and how much thought went into making sure that all positive or negative contingencies go in be handled within the confines of the budget constraints. Presentation Binder A tabbed presentation binder is created that includes a section for the budget, the lined script, the detailed cast list, the strip board, the one liner schedule, the day out of days for talent, vehicles, special effects, stunts, etc. The presentation binder includes an original CD, with backup CD, of all the production files, including the production script (both in native Movie Magic format and PDF format), the Movie Magic Scheduling File (both in native Movie Magic format and PDF format), and the Movie Magic Budgeting File (both in native Movie Magic format and PDF format). In addition I supplying PDF versions of all of the schedules, breakdowns and day out of days so that the client does not have their own copy of these Movie Magic softwares can open and print additional copies of all the material. That's all there is to it. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The more you need the money, the more people will tell you what to do. The less control you will have. The more bullshit you will have to swallow. The less joy it will bring. Know this and plan accordingly. - Hugh Macleod, How To Be Creative: 15. ? As far as I know, no money was involved in Dailies 12th project, crafting and shooting a PSA (public service announcement) for a local non-profit organziation. Having to subordinate one?s self to another?s vision is never easy and money just helps make things more contentious by multiples. However, it?s obvious that the spots for this project were crafted by folks who fell in love with their organizations. And so subordinating themselves to their ?partner? organizations wasn?t quite so difficult. The four I thought were extremely effective and informative: JD Taylor?s spot for Georgia River Network, was beautiful and moving. Amy Jackson and Mark Burch?s PAWS Atlanta spot could make the Grinch?s heart grow three sizes. Maxwell Guberman?s PSA for Citizens for Progressive Transit was witty, driving home the point that Atlanta needs world class public transportation without using dry statistics or finger pointing (I?m looking at all you mofos other than Dekalb and Fulton who don?t want to get off your asses and pay for MARTA). And I loved Raymond Carr?s work on behalf of The Center for Puppetry Arts; an organization that?s been around forever but I?ve never actually visited. In the debate between art and commerce there?s always the danger of being too cynical and to be close minded. Although these are non- profits, PSAs are still commercials and they?re still selling. If you don?t believe PSAs sell anything checkout the PSAs put out by the Reagan, Bush, Clinton and GW administrations. So the fear that, even for the most noble of causes, one might be promoting a message they don?t totally agree with is more than possible. Yet, when art and community intersect like they did on this particular Dailies the city of Atlanta can only benefit. There are two more screenings this Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th. Check them out and support Dailies. And supposedly some of Push Push?s parties are legendary for lasting into the wee hours of the morn. So for you some of you revelers, Push Push?s tenth anniversary partay may interest you. Message-ID: <429D2F03-441B-4709-8D2E-DD076B4D4337@mindspring.com> Hey All, Atlanta Film Festival is looking for a few reliable people to help out volunteering in the projection room. It's a chance to see what happens behind the dark theater!! You will control the world!!! Basically, they need people who can roll the videos. Push the buttons. Change the tapes. It's something you can learn quickly and someone will be there to oversee you, so no worries. Try something new, learn something cool, come on out and volunteer to help make AFF better! Call me if interested. Shifts start today. 404.307.8022.
